Distinguishing Between the Drums: Fiber, Steel & Plastic Barrels

Drums are used in countless industries for the packaging, containment and shipment of a wide range of products. Fiber, steel and plastic drums are all widely used, but each offers its own benefits and drawbacks. While some options offer exceptional strength and durability, others are better suited to certain types of products.

Deciding what type of drum to use is sometimes challenging, so we put together this detailed look at some of the key differences between fiber, steel and plastic barrels to make it a bit easier.

Fiber Drums

Also known as fiberboard drums, fiber drums have been on the market since the first part of the 20th century. They revolutionized the industry by providing a lighter container for shipping than wood, the standard product of the day. Today, they are some of the most common drums on the market.

Since they are much lighter than steel, they cost less to ship. The paperboard they are constructed from also costs less than plastic or steel, making fiber drums a more cost-effective option. They are made mostly from recyclable materials, so they have a minimal environmental impact. Fiber drums can be produced to different specifications. Some are even made solely for certain products, like fluorescent light bulbs.

The main drawback, however, is that they generally are not appropriate for transporting hazardous materials. They can also be difficult to handle and move with forklifts.

Steel Drums

Steel is durable and reliable, and when strength is a factor in product storage or transport, there is simply no better material. It performs well in both hot and cold temperatures and is resistant to fire. This makes it an ideal material for drums containing flammable or combustible materials. Steel barrels are also economical and environmentally friendly.

Steel drums are widely used to store and transport hazardous materials. They provide a high level of protection even under extreme circumstances, so they are the product of choice when dangerous goods are involved. While their weight makes them more expensive to ship than fiber drums, they are easier to reuse, giving you more for your money. Since they are so durable and resistant to damage, insurers also tend to charge less to insure shipments that are packaged in steel drums.

Plastic Drums

Sometimes referred to as poly drums, plastic drums are another versatile option for storing and transporting a wide range of materials and goods. They are made using high-density, high molecular weight polyethylene, or HDPE. This material is inert and resistant to both high and low pH contents.

Because they feature thick walls that are leak-proof and UV resistant, they work well for storing and transporting chemicals, food and pharmaceuticals. They can even be used for certain hazardous materials.

Plastic barrels are also affordable. Because plastic is cheaper and easier to produce than metal, these barrels cost less than steel barrels. When properly cleaned, they can be reused time and time again, further enabling you to get the most out of your initial investment. After its life as a shipping or storage container, a plastic drum can be reused as a compost bin.

Which Is Right for You: Fiber, Steel or Plastic?

When trying to determine which type of barrel is right for your storage or shipping needs, you need to consider your intended use. If you plan on using the barrel for any type of hazardous material, it is best to stick with steel or plastic. While some hazardous solids can be stored in fiber drums, their use for hazardous materials is extremely limited. Plastic barrels are your best choice for food, corrosive chemicals and pharmaceuticals. When you need top-of-the-line protection, go with steel. Fiber drums are a good choice when you want to save on shipping costs and have the option of manufacturing the drums to your specifications.
