Distinguishing Dangerous Goods: Hazard Class 1

Workers discussing over clipboard
The essence of our business at Air Sea Containers is helping our customers ship safely and efficiently, and the essence of safe and efficient hazardous materials transport is knowing and applying specific best practices for what you’re shipping. All hazmat goods are different, and each type and classification has its own challenges. Fortunately, hazmat classification standards take much of the guesswork out of hazmat shipping. The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, or GHS, is the worldwide system of hazmat transport regulations that gives us the nine hazmat classifications you might be familiar with. Today, we’ll do a quick rundown of the basics of shipping items in Class 1: Explosives.  Knowing and following them will facilitate safe and expeditious shipping—and it’ll also make it easy to find the perfect hazmat packaging solution from Air Sea. What Falls Under Hazard Class 1?

Hazard Class 1 is a broad category that covers many types of items. Some are among the world’s most sensitive and dangerous explosives, and some pose relatively low risks. Thus, it’s vitally important to know the specific regulations for the sub-divisions you’re working with. Common categories of items that fall into Hazard Class 1 include:
  • Commercial and industrial high explosives
  • Ammunition
  • Fireworks
  • Flares
  • Ignition devices
  • Airbag inflators
Each of these items falls into a specific sub-division based on its properties. The sub-divisions of Hazard Class 1 include:
  • 1.1: Items with the potential for large and extremely dangerous explosions
  • 1.2: Items with potential for projection and shrapnel danger, but not mass explosions
  • 1.3: Items with a fire hazard and some combination of minor blast and projection hazards
  • 1.4: Items with only a minor fire hazard
  • 1.5: Items that present a mass explosion hazard but are less sensitive
  • 1.6: Items that are less sensitive and also have no mass explosion hazard
Again, it’s important to work within the specific regulations for the item and category you’re shipping—but there are a few ground rules that any Class 1 hazmat shipping will need to follow.

Basic Shipping Requirements for Hazard Class 1

The most important general rules for Class 1 hazmat shipping include: Once you’re familiar with these, you’ll need to learn about the specific requirements of the hazardous goods you want to ship. To do this, refer to the DOT’s hazmat tables, which list each substance and the relevant regulations under which it falls.
